There’s a stained glass window which sits over the entrance to the Palace Hostel in Childers.
It was fitted during the rebuild after the 1902 fire and for almost a century it stood as a beacon to the most prominent facade on the main street.
Somehow it survived the June 2000 Backpackers Hostel fire. Today it sits as a champion of the fight. A symbol of resilience and resitance and a reminder of the heritage values of the building.
Although it wasn’t as simple as just going through the process of a re-build after the fire.
There were significant challenges faced by Council as they navigated their way through plans to mend the town and its main street, while establishing a fitting memorial to the victims.
